2011 Growing Season
With the start of the 2011 growing season here on Johns Island, SC well underway, I will make periodic posts here indicating availability of various varieties and a few photos. The story so far has been the windy, hot and dry conditions -- windy enough to twist small lettuce plants right out of the ground.
Medium and large sized Forellenschluss lettuce (and dill) have been especially well received with the preference over Paris Island Cos. about 10 to 1. Medium sized Forellenschluss was $1.50 per head; $2.00 for some of the best large heads. Paris Island Cos went for $1.00 per head. Dill was $2.00 for an entire plant or about 50 cents for a sprig. As of this writing the Spring planting of lettuce is almost sold out.
Spring Turnips are almost finished. Two thirds of customers just wanted the roots, which went for 50 cents per pound -- same price for tops.
